Roy Ong

Co-founder, Operations

Roy Ong is Co-founder, Operations of Onethird. He has a strong foundation in sleep science and translational healthcare innovation, originating from his experience as an Honours research student. His research was conducted at the Royal Melbourne Hospital's Intensive Care Unit, where he evaluated the accuracy of a novel sensor-based sleep monitoring device in critically ill patients. This experience allowed him to work at the intersection of clinical research, medical technological advancement, and patient care, highlighting the importance of accurate, real-time physiological monitoring in improving health outcomes. He led patient-facing data collection, collaborated with clinical teams, and applied digital tools such as Epic EMR and RedCap to ensure high-fidelity data capture and analysis under complex conditions.

Roy is driven by the belief that sleep is a critical pillar of health, productivity, and well-being—yet remains poorly understood and often underserved in both clinical and consumer contexts. Poor sleep contributes to a host of physical and mental health issues, and its impact is amplified in high-stakes environments like hospitals, industrial worksites, and aged care. Onethird's mission is to leverage advances in biosensing, artificial intelligence, and behavioural science to develop smart, adaptive sleep technologies that respond in real time to individual needs. Through research partnerships and iterative design, the company aims to build sleep solutions that are not only scientifically grounded but also practical, scalable, and accessible.

As a co-founder of Onethird, Roy aims to ensure university-based research collaborations are conducted smoothly and plays a pivotal role in aligning product development with scientific evidence and real-world needs. He is deeply involved in the ongoing development and validation of SOMA (Sleep Optimising Mattress Accessory), working alongside engineers, sleep experts, and academic partners to optimise the system's accuracy and clinical utility. His frontline experience in both hospital and consumer health settings positions him to bridge the gap between clinical insight and innovative product design.

Beyond research, Roy brings healthcare experience through his role as clinical observer at the National Heart Institute of Malaysia, where he served as a liaison between patients and doctors, helping schedule post-operative care and ensuring smooth workflow across surgical teams. These early clinical experiences shaped his understanding of the importance of workflow integration, empathy, and communication in complex medical environments.

Roy offers practical experience in clinical research, a deep understanding of sleep science and data integrity, and a commitment to translational impact. His skill set in research coordination, stakeholder communication, and interdisciplinary teamwork equips him to contribute effectively to collaborative projects that drive scientific innovation and real-world change.
