Kirk Kee
Co-founder, Science
Dr Kirk Kee is Co-founder, Science of Onethird. Kirk is a leading clinician-researcher with expertise in diagnostic sleep physiology, complex sleep-disordered breathing, and neurophysiological integration in respiratory care. Concurrently, Kirk is Head of Sleep and Physiology in the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and serves as a Technical Assessor for the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA), underscoring his recognised expertise in the oversight of research physiology laboratories. He is also a Regular Lecturer for Royal Melbourne Hospital Postgraduate Medical Students.
Kirk has extensive research experience in the bidirectional relationships between sleep disorders and other co-morbid conditions such as heart failure, atrial fibrillation and epilepsy. His PhD thesis involved the measurement of complex respiratory and sleep physiology in heart failure patients, providing him with hands-on experience in accurate real-time measurement of sleep parameters. He has a strong track record of integrating quality improvement and diagnostic precision into research, and a growing interest in the overlap between sleep and functional neurology. Despite a high clinical workload, he has co-authored 26 peer-reviewed journal articles (14 as first or last author), contributed two book chapters, and published over 40 conference abstracts.
Kirk led and contributed to multiple investigator-initiated research projects in hospital settings, co-supervised 3 Doctor of Medicine (MD) students to completion, and is currently co-supervising 1 MD student and 1 PhD student. He presented as an invited speaker at national and international scientific meetings, including the American Thoracic Society, the Australian Sleep Association & National Healthcare Conferences.
Kirk has engaged extensively with public audiences through interviews in The Age, Jean Hailes Foundation, and Women's Weekly. In his work as a sleep physician for over a decade, Kirk has become acutely aware of how vital sleep is and what is important to the consumer when it comes to the optimisation of sleep.
In summary, Kirk offers expertise in sleep physiology and a proven track record of collaborative, translational research. His experience spans complex diagnostics, interdisciplinary team science, and community engagement. He contributes to Onethird’s mission through both technical leadership and a commitment to impactful, publication-driven research that informs real-world applications.
